Varnish is a clear transparent hard protective finish or film. varnish has little or no color and has no added pigment as opposed to paint or wood stain which contains pigment. however, some varnish products are marketed as a combined stain and varnish. varnish is primarily used in wood finishing applications where the natural tones and grains in the wood are intended to be visible.. Varnished timber in need of painting. if you are just looking to do a quick makeover and don’t want to go the whole hog in terms of stripping the varnish off and starting with a clean base, there are products available today that will enable you to paint almost straight over any existing varnish.. The sanding gives the paint a better surface to grip. priming also helps the paint stick better. most of these steps help the paint last longer and look better doing so. wood rot and damaged wood, in general, may slow down the process. painting over this just lets the damage get worse, which isn’t good for your home or furniture..
