I think glassing a wood boat is condemning it to a early grave. wood when properly maintained will last almost forever. there are wooden boats that are over 100 years old still sailing. glassing traps the moisture inside the wood. rot city. i bought a wood sailboat that had been glassed. i ground the glass off and replaced a lot of wood that. Technique is to simply fiberglass over the wood hull of the boat, essentially sealing out the water and adding the structural strength of the fiberglass to the hull. but this has its downside. on an old boat the wood in the boat is wet. because of the damp, rot has probably infected the wood even though the boat looks sound and is seaworthy.. Most fiberglass boats are built from a female mold that accepts multiple layers of fiberglass cloth or matt and resin that eventually cure together to form a hull shape. first, the mold is cleaned and prepped with a mold release wax that allows what will become the fiberglass hull to be pulled from the mold without sticking..

There is no denying that fiberglass can withstand a shocking amount of neglect. but if you want to keep your fiberglass boat looking it’s best, it will cost you. if you take two equivalent boats, one fiberglass and one of traditional wood construction, both the same age, both with an equal amount of brightwork, and both kept in true yacht.
