Above the waterline marine paint. topside paint features an oil-based formula that can be applied above the waterline on metal and wood surfaces. it also works well as fiberglass boat paint. these paints are great for touching up scratches or minor dents to improve the appearance of your watercraft.. Just now the boat is nice and dry so tomorrow i will be getting down there with a scraper and removing the paint back to bare wood, which i will paint with primer and undercoat and enamel in the usual way. the advantage of enamel over bilge paint is that it is much easier to wipe clean.. I recently purchased a picaroon ii sailboat (featured elsewhere on this site), the hull of which is built of eastern white cedar strips, sheathed with epoxy/glass on the outside, with larch (tamarack) and fir ply frames & bulkheads, the whole being thoroughly coated with epoxy on the inside (i.e., in the bilge area). the bilges in this boat are always wet because of the (necessary) constant.
